The film begins with text appearing on the screen and a male voice reading out the text that appears. He is talking about how the film is inspired by true events and then goes on to mention how many violent crimes are commited in America each year, there is low non-diegetic music accompanying it which makes us focus on what is being said much more. This is a great way to add tension as we are told that what happens in the film has actually happened in real life, meaning that we understand that somehow it could happen to us which makes us more afraid of what we are about to see. It then cuts to a pan of an American street filled with houses, whilst this is happening we hear a 911 call being made and a woman explaining that there's strangers in her house and there's also blood on the wall and various weapons around the house, as this is being said we are shown on screen exactly what the woman is explaining. All of this together creates tension and fear within the audience as it is made to be extremely realistic.
